Turning Internships Into Full-Time Roles
Internships are an excellent opportunity to test drive your choice of industry. Once you have your feet wet and time on the job, you may choose to pursue a full time role. You are already in a good position if you have performed well in the role. Transitioning to a full time job (with benefits) is a natural transition but requires planning with consistent communication with your supervisor.
It is important that you have a consistent meeting schedule with your boss or supervisor to discuss your role and impact on the overall objectives of the organization. Remember you are not there unless there is a problem that needs to be solved.
Taking a problem solving approach with your boss and showing a clear understanding of the issues impacting problems that need to be solved will assist in differentiating you from other interns or the creation of a requisition for your permanent role.
Take the approach of partnering with your supervisor by asking some simple questions.
- “What can I do to take things off your plate to focus on the bigger issues impacting the organization”.
- “Can I provide my observations regarding the challenges and offer my thoughts on how they can best be addressed”.
- “What else can I do to help bring the team onto the same page”
- “I have the bandwidth to do more and want to be a problem identifier and resolver”.
What is consistent in the above bullets is that you are willing to work harder to research what can be done to improve the overall organization. This can come in many forms and will require some casual meetings with your Supervisor or other management team members you begin to network with on a frequent basis.
Remember people like employees who make the extra effort to provide more value to organizations. This does not mean that you are arrogant and overstepping your role. Be a problem identifier and offer solutions. No one is interested in just hearing about the problem without suggestions on how to fix them.
