Jumping into the College Environment. Staying Active and Meeting New People
College can offer a great opportunity to join or participate in a vast number of activities. If you are a sports person then intramurals or even competitive college sports may be for you. If your interests are related to the environment or you enjoy active political movements, college groups are typically available for you to join.
Now that you are on your own, finding solid relationships with common interests will help you with anxiety and loneliness. Having a friend to push you when you are lazy will help you over the hump and in the end improve your state of mind.
Every school will offer intramural sports in all shapes and sizes. Use the school intranet and website to research and sign up for what looks like fun. No need to worry about tryouts or intimidating opinions about your skill level. Just show up, pay a small fee, and everything will be set up and ready to go. Enjoy the time with your new friends.
Sports is not the only option regarding extracurricular activities. Clubs in all areas of interests get together and explore their passions. Simply research all that is offered, understand your time limitations, talk to friends and get into gear.
If you are not finding what you want, create your own organization. With the help of the school, you can post your interest in creating a club or organization. Placing brochures in the student activity center, dorm lobbies and outside of classes are sources of recruitment.
Most schools will ask that you run your marketing by a committee for approval to post. Follow a simple template and provide them what they need so you can get their endorsement.
